It is produced in the same area as Orvieto Bianco, in the San Venanzo territory towards the Tiber valley, in restricted Amerino and Viterbo areas.
The “Rosso Orvietano” or “Orvietano Rosso” denomination is reserved to various types of red wine, with reference to primary grapevines: Aleatico, Cabernet franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo red, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Montepulciano, Pinot Nero and Sangiovese alone or together for at least 70% and furthermore from secondary grapevines, alone or at the most 30% of Barbera, common Cesanese, Colorino and Dolcetto. Ageing: at least 2-3 years.
Regulations: in establishing the characteristics for consumption, “Rosso Orvietano” should have a lively, intense, ruby red colour, at times with purplish highlights, an intense vinous aroma, at times herbal, a soft, elegant and mellow flavour.
This wine is a good complement to tasty roasts, game and mature cheeses and can be drunk up to 4 years from harvest.
