The area of D.O.C. production includes the hilly territory of Amelia, Narni, Calvi, Otricoli, Montecastrilli, Alviano, Lugnano and Penna in Teverina, Giove, and part of the Terni area.
A territory known mainly for red wines, but by regulation it is characterised for various types: white, red and rosé.
In the Rosso, Rosso Superiore, Rosato and Novello the basis is made up of Sangiovese grapes (65-80%), accompanied by Merlot, Montepulciano, Cannaiolo, Ciliegiolo and Barbera;
in the “Colli Amerini Bianco” type the basis is Trebbiano Toscano (70-85%), with Grechetto, Verdello, Garganega and Malvasia Toscana; in the “Colli Amerini Malvasia” type the basis is Malvasia Toscana (85-100%), the remainder is made up of Trebbiano Toscano and others.
A good match with the Bianco (white) is with first courses of fresh-water fish, fried lake fish. The Rosato (rosé) is associated with flavourful antipasti, risotto or pasta with light sauces and egg dishes. The Rosso (red) accompanies fresh salamis, first courses with tomato sauces, grilled or roast white meat, slightly mature cheeses.
