The DOC Amelia is named after the Umbrian town Amelia that already in Roman times was appreciated for the quality of its grapes and wines. There are numerous references in historical documents that bear witness to this: Virgilio also in his “Le Georgiche” ( 36-29 BC) writes that the wine produced here was transported to Rome to supply the city.
The DOC Amelia aims to synthesize the excellence of a terroir in the province of Terni unique for soil characteristics and climatic conditions. The area of production includes the hilly territory of Attigliano, Giove, Penna in Teverina, Alviano, Amelia, Calvi dell’Umbria, Guardea, Lugnano in Teverina, Montecastrilli, Narni, Otricoli, Sangemini, Stroncone and Terni.
The designation of DOC Amelia is reserved for wines Bianco, Rosso, Rosso Riserva, Ciliegiolo and Ciliegiolo Riserva, Rosato, Novello, Grechetto, Malvasia, Merlot and Merlot Riserva, Sangiovese, Sangiovese Riserva, Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice.
The DOC Amelia is strongly committed to protecting indigenous grapes that make the history of its territory as Grechetto and Ciliegiolo, for the unique combination of soil, climate and exposure, they found here the ideal geographical location to fully express their potential.
The Rosso, Rosso Riserva, Rosato, Novello and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice are obtained from Sangiovese in quantities of not less than 50% and the remaining from other grape varieties of similar color suitable for cultivation in the Umbria Region. Similarly, Bianco and Vin Santo are made from Trebbiano Toscano least 50%. For all other wines Grechetto, Malvasia, Merlot and Merlot Riserva, Sangiovese, Sangiovese Riserva the percentage indicated in the name of the grape variety must not be less than 85 %.
A good match with the Bianco (white) is with first courses of fresh-water fish, fried lake fish. The Rosato (rosé) is associated with flavourful antipasti, risotto or pasta with light sauces and egg dishes. The Rosso (red) accompanies fresh salamis, first courses with tomato sauces, grilled or roast white meat, slightly mature cheeses.
